With low rates of economic growth and a difficult geopolitical outlook, Europe's economy risks falling behind at global level. This talk provides a state-of-play on where the European Union stands in relation to the emerging economic, political and security challenges, and explains why the EU is finding it so difficult to address them. Focussing on the role and importance of the EU budget and the EU's macro-economic policymaking tools, it will discuss which policies have been proposed to address the upcoming challenges, and will also provide an outlook on important upcoming developments!
Speaker: Lasse Michael BOEHM, Head of the Economic Governance and EMU Scrutiny Unit (EGOV) at the European Parliament
Lasse is leading a team of economists providing expertise and analysis for the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) on macro-economic, monetary and fiscal policy developments. The EGOV unit monitors the European Semester for economic policy coordination, as well as euro area monetary policy. It provides briefings for the ECON committee's monetary dialogues with the European Central Bank and regular dialogues with the European Commission and EU member states on the implementation and impact of the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility. In addition, the unit provides analyses on the state-of-play of the EU Banking Union, including for hearings with the Single Supervisory Mechanism in charge of banking supervision and other relevant EU-level institutions.
